Bisnis, BADUNG - At the 10th World Water Forum, Indonesia has been actively promoting the importance of harmonious collaboration between the government and the private sector for sustainable water resource management.

The emphasis is on the potential for both sectors to work together and complement each other in achieving the shared objective of ensuring water availability for the welfare of all.

Expert Staff to the Minister of PUPR for Technology, Industry, and the Environment, as well as Spokesperson for the Ministry of PUPR Endra S. Atmawidjaja highlighted that achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6—adequate and equitable access to water and sanitation—is still far from the 2030 target. This challenge is not unique to Indonesia but is seen in many countries.

In Indonesia, while access to clean water has reached 92% and access to sanitation has reached 81%, Endra pointed out that access to adequate water through piped installations is only at 30%, and adequate sanitation is still below 5%.

"That is still very low compared to the global target, and it is challenging for various countries to achieve that target," said Endra at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center on Thursday (23/5/2024).

He explained that the significant gap in access to clean water and proper sanitation is a consequence of climate change. Additionally, the rate of population growth and urbanization is outpacing the government's ability to provide adequate water and sanitation access.

Endra emphasized that the 10th World Water Forum in Bali is a pivotal moment for the global community to address and narrow the gap in access to clean water and proper sanitation. He highlighted the critical role of private sector involvement in accelerating equitable access to these essential services.

"As the President said, avoid competition. We must achieve a new path to ensure equality, and this can be accomplished through collaboration. This is the key to overcoming the water challenge," Endra pointed.

SUSTAINABLE WATER RESOURCES

The sustainability of water resources is crucial not only for household needs but also for the tourism sector. As an archipelagic country, Indonesia boasts numerous water tourism destinations, such as beaches, rivers, and lakes, which significantly contribute to the community's economy through tourism.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno emphasized that private sector involvement is vital in managing water resources to support the creation of high-quality and sustainable tourism.

According to him, as the host of the 10th World Water Forum, Indonesia is taking a leadership role in facilitating opportunities for private sector involvement to realize sustainable water resources management.

He emphasized that the role of the private sector in water management should extend beyond mere investment. Innovation and adaptation are essential to achieving sustainable water resource management, ensuring that these initiatives are effective and beneficial for the long term.

"The private sector is expected to not only seek profit but also collaborate to provide essential human rights, namely access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene," said Sandiaga.

POLICY HARMONIZATION

In seeking harmonious relations between the government and the private sector, Sandiaga acknowledged that policies must be made to facilitate ease of doing business. He noted that one of the government's initiatives to manage sustainable water resources in the tourism sector is the establishment of the Kura-Kura Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the Sanur SEZ.

Through the establishment of SEZs, regional development will be approached sustainably, with a specific focus on the water sector. Sandiaga pointed that investment in the water sector is a long-term venture fraught with risks, necessitating technological innovation to achieve efficiency and sustainability.

"The government will continue to push for regulations that can increase the involvement of the private sector in water management," Sandiaga stated.

Meanwhile, Vice President General Secretary of Danone Indonesia Vera Galuh highlighted that water issues are crucial and must be resolved through collaboration.

She claimed that at the 10th World Water Forum, her party had shared the best practices undertaken by corporations in safeguarding the water resource ecosystem. Particularly, endeavors to safeguard river watersheds (DAS) and their ecosystems entail the participation of all stakeholders, spanning from the government to communities and society at large.

"Water issue involves multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder approaches, with various government institutions engaged in regulating the sector," she elaborated.

Vera emphasized the importance of consistency in government policies concerning water usage in Indonesia for the private sector. This alignment ensures that existing regulations facilitate business actors in managing water resources with best practices.

"However, beyond regulatory frameworks, it is hoped that companies will also conduct their business responsibly," Vera added.
