Bisnis, JAKARTA—The government's plan to use nuclear energy in electricity generation seems undead. The government is increasingly confident that atomic energy would be a significant boon for Indonesia's goal of reaching net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060 or sooner.
Despite debates on safety and reliability concerns for nuclear power plants (NPP), the government is continuing to expedite the commercialization of small-scale NPPs.
By 2032, the commercial operation of NPPs is expected to be integrated into state-owned electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN)’s power network. At that time, the installed commercial operating capacity of NPPs is expected to reach 1 gigawatt (GW) to 2 GW.
PLN itself, through its power generation sub-holding PT PLN Nusantara Power, has explored cooperation in the construction of NPPs with several countries, including South Korea, Russia, and the United States.
