Bisnis, JAKARTA — The food estate program, initially proposed in the 1990s, was raised again during President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo's first term in a limited meeting on April 28, 2020.
Shortly after the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned about the risks to global food security during the COVID-19 pandemic, President Jokowi instructed his ministers to establish a food estate.
The concept involved opening new integrated farming lands containing food crops, and discussions on the food estate continued on May 5, 2020, and September 23, 2020.
The success or failure of the food estate program, especially during Jokowi's era, has recently sparked discussions after being criticized in the second vice presidential debate last Sunday (1/21/2024).
