Bisnis, JAKARTA — Several telecommunications companies are eyeing to market embedded SIM (e-SIM), a type of SIM card where the module is integrated within the device and typically capable of remote provisioning, i.e., end-users can add or remove subscriptions to service providers remotely, without changing physical SIM cards.
The Communications and Information Ministry sees e-SIM as a technological advancement that will make things more convenient for end-users and providers and a vector for growth for the latter.
PT Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel) and Indosat, XL Axiata, and Smartfren are among the early adopters of e-SIM by gradually introducing the product to foreign tourists.
VP for Corporate Communications and Social Responsibility at Telkomsel, Saki H. Bramono, said that the company marketed e-SIMs to foreigners in December 2023 and plans to continue gradual marketing while awaiting regulations for e-SIM.
