Bisnis, JAKARTA — The Indonesian government does not remain silent despite the incomplete process of relinquishing 35 percent of Shell Upstream Overseas Ltd's participating interest (PI) in the Masela Block.

Shell's persistent delay in completing the divestment of shares in the Abadi liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in the Arafuru Sea, Maluku, has further motivated the government to exert pressure on Shell for the prompt transfer of PI.

The Indonesian government has issued an ultimatum to the company. If the Masela Abadi Project fails to commence operations by 2024, the government will reclaim the project and re-tender Shell's PI in the Masela Block.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif emphasized Indonesia's strong position in taking over Shell's participating rights. According to the first amendment to the plan of development (PoD) signed in 2019, the government has the authority to re-tender the PI for the management of the Masela Block if there is no progress in field development after five years.
