Bisnis, JAKARTA — Indonesia's chances of winning the battle over electronic transactions’ customs duties at the World Trade Organization (WTO) are dwindling. Despite receiving support from developing jurisdictions, the business world remains adamant about requesting the continuation of the 25-year-old moratorium.

The government has been rallying support from developing countries to counter the WTO’s bid to make the moratorium permanent. After successfully garnering unanimous support from India, South Africa, and Pakistan, Indonesia's latest development aligns its stance with Argentina and Brazil.

“Several developing countries have positions similar to Indonesia. We reject the implementation of a permanent moratorium,” said Askolani, Director General of Customs and Excise, last weekend.

The garnered support serves as a strong basis for policymakers to voice their opposition to the moratorium, which is planned to be voiced at the meeting on March 13, 2024. Unfortunately, efforts to abolish the moratorium have faced rejection, not only from the business world but also from the WTO.
