Bisnis, JAKARTA— The government is optimistic that the successor of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will carry forward the natural resource downstream program to enhance value within the country.

Minister of Investment/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Bahlil Lahadalia has raised concerns about the potential that one of the presidential candidates in the 2024 election might not support the continuation of President Jokowi's downstream program. Bahlil expressed his belief that there are individuals or groups who may seek to hinder the program's continuity and could influence certain presidential candidates.

“There are individuals among the presidential candidates who may formulate initiatives to halt the downstreaming program. This is a perilous situation, as it could lead to the undue influence of affluent individuals in our country,” Bahlil made these remarks during a press conference on Investment Realization for the Q3 2023 held on Friday (20/10).

Bahlil has expressed his concern that if the downstream program is not sustained, Indonesia might regress to a period akin to the colonial era when the Dutch East India Company (VOC) controlled Indonesian raw materials for export without undergoing processing.
