Bisnis, JAKARTA — The smelter furnace explosion at the PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel smelter in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, claimed 19 lives and left dozens injured. Workers immediately demanded improvements in workplace safety in the nickel industry.

The explosion occurred on Sunday (24/12) at 05:30 WITA in the Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP). At least 51 people were affected, with 19 fatalities, including 11 Indonesian workers and 8 foreign workers, while others remain in intensive care.

According to Bloomberg, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Wednesday (27/12) that China would collaborate with the Indonesian government to address the accident, as there were Chinese foreign workers among the victims.

The incident prompted workers at Tsinghan Holding Group's facilities in Indonesia to stage protests or demonstrations, demanding improvements in working conditions, especially in terms of workplace safety. On Wednesday (27/12), hundreds of workers gathered at the explosion site to call for fair compensation from corporate entities to the victims' families. They also demanded Tsinghan comply with health and safety regulations.
